A Place in the Sun Magazine Article
Debbie Hall has always lived life in the fast lane. She loves the buzz in her home city of Manchester, and as a regional manager for Peacocks Clothing, she’s never far from the next challenging situation. However, when she turned 40 she decided that it was time to slow down a little.
“My birthday was a real milestone,” she says. “I love my job, but it’s very demanding. I decided that from now on, I was going to make more time for myself. I’d also reached a stage in my life where I felt financially secure, and was ready to make a sensible, long-term investment.”
Buying a second home abroad where she could spend her holidays seemed like the obvious thing to do. Debbie had actually looked into Spanish property in 2006, but had been put off by high prices and an even higher density of developments. Turkey, with its balmy Mediterranean climate and unspoilt countryside, was an appealing alternative. Ever the businesswoman, Debbie embarked on her house hunt with a very clear idea of what she was looking for.
“Because I live alone in the UK, I liked the idea of moving into a small complex in Turkey with a real community feel. However, my job can be very stressful at times, so I also wanted somewhere peaceful where I could completely relax,” she says. “That’s an awful lot to ask of one property!”
Debbie’s search for the perfect Turkish holiday home began in front of her computer, looking through dozens of property websites, she began to get a better idea of the range of properties that were available. Once she felt familiar with the market, she paid a visit to a holiday homes exhibition in Manchester. While doing the rounds of the various stands, Debbie met our representative, who suggested that she fly out to Turkey to view some of their properties. Debbie agreed, and arranged to spend a long weekend in the south-west of the country, along with her parents.
Debbie was shown several completed projects during her whirlwind four-day tour of Muğla province. However, it was the Mountain View development, with its Olympic-sized pool and wooden diving deck that really caught her eye. The resort, which is right in the heart of unspoilt Ovacik, is made up of 16 two and three-bedroom detached villas. Debbie was immediately drawn to their granite worktops, marble stairs and chrome detailing. “Although they’ve got the Turkish look, you can tell that British builders have been involved,” she says. Mountain View’s daily housekeeping service would allow Debbie to put her feet up while she was in Turkey, and her family were impressed by the facilities at the adjacent 4* Hotel, to which the resort’s residents have access to. Shortly before she flew back to Manchester, Debbie signed on the dotted line for a three-bedroom villa, which she was able to buy outright.
The villa’s price tag which included furnishings and white goods was, in Debbie words, “too good to resist.” She was also keen to take advantage of the developer’s rental management service, which she has already used to let her villa out for several weeks over the summer when she was not using it.
To prevent off-plan panic from setting in, Debbie was emailed every month with progress reports throughout the villa’s construction, attaching photos so that she could watch her property taking shape. Its features – from the open-plan ground floor to the huge balcony – met with her long-distance approval, and she couldn’t wait to see it for herself when it was completed in June. Arriving with “just her bikini”, Debbie’s first visit to her fully furnished new home was completely free of hassle.
“I’ve known people who spent months decorating and furnishing their new homes. I had it really easy in comparison,” she says. “All I needed to buy was a couple of cushions!”
Unsurprisingly, Debbie’s family are queuing up to visit. Her brother and his wife are holidaying at the villa in September, swiftly followed by her parents in October. Her sister is also planning to fly out with her husband and children. Debbie isn’t surprised that they’ve fallen for Mountain View’s charms. “I absolutely love being out in Turkey,” she says. When I’m there I don’t have to lift a finger. If I need something from the local supermarket all I have to do is ring them, and they’ll arrange for it to be sent over to me. It really is the perfect place to unwind.”
